JAMES CLOTFELTER (Lighting Design) is a New York based lighting designer committed to the creation of collaborative and socially conscious work for theatre and dance. He is focused on the development of light as a character and is constantly exploring ways to sustain performance outside of the traditional venue.
James is an Artistic Associate with Pig Iron Theatre Company, Resident Lighting Designer and Production Manager for Miro Dance Theatre, and a Company Member of johannes wieland. In 2005 he co-founded Mlab, a laboratory for innovations and design technologies in the live arts that has realized numerous scenic, lighting, and video designs specifically tailored for efficient and sustainable touring.
Current and recent collaborations include work with John Jasperse, Rennie Harris. Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Michael John Garces, Bill Shannon, Reggie Wilson, Antony Rizzi, David Szlasa, and Thaddeus Phillips, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Barrow Street Theatre, Rainpan 43, The Play Company, Southern Repertory Theatre, Z Space Studios, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Gas & Electric Arts, and Lubelski Teatr Tanca.
